Waʻahila Ridge Trail

Town Side

The Waʻahila Ridge Trail is one of our go-to hikes for stunning views and a good workout. This ridge trail runs through a forest of Cook pines and native Hawaiian plants, offering breathtaking vistas of the Koʻolau Mountain Range and the valley below. It’s the kind of hike that feels rewarding every step of the way, and on clear days, the panoramic views at the top are truly unforgettable. This trail starts moderate and then gets more intense as you gain elevation. You can always start the hike, have lunch, and then hike out. It is at the top of St. Louis Heights- a super steep drive; take your time while going through the neighborhoods.

  • Length: 5.3 miles round trip (about 1.5 to 2 hours).

  • Difficulty: Moderate into Hard

  • Parking: Free parking is available at Waʻahila Ridge State Recreation Area. Spaces are limited, so carpool if possible.

  • Trail Conditions: Parts of the trail can be dry and dusty, while others may be muddy—wear sturdy, grippy shoes.

  • What to Bring: Water, sunscreen, and a hat (the ridge sections are exposed to the sun).

  • Crowds: This trail is moderately popular, but it tends to be less crowded than other ridge hikes, especially during weekdays. The parking lot may be busy because people are enjoying the park.

  • Safety Tip: As you go up, watch your footing on the ridgeline, as some sections can be narrow with steep drop-offs. If you have a hat on, watch for low branches at times.
