KoKo Head

East Side

Ready for a challenge? Koko Head Crater Trail is one of the most iconic hikes on Oahu, and it’s not for the faint of heart! This trail takes you straight up an abandoned railway track with over 1,000 steps (more like steep railroad ties) to the summit of Koko Head. The climb is intense, but the reward at the top is worth every step—panoramic views of the southeastern coastline, Hanauma Bay, and even Diamond Head on clear days. The incline gets steeper after the bridge crossing. Many people go to the bridge and then turn around- the view is good there, too.

While kids can do this hike, it’s important to know they may tire easily due to the steep incline.

  • Length: 1.8 miles round trip (about 1 to 2 hours, depending on your pace).

  • Difficulty: Strenuous (steep incline and uneven steps).

  • Parking: Free parking is available at Koko Head District Park. Arrive early in the morning to avoid the heat and secure a spot.

  • Trail Conditions: The “steps” are wooden post, some of which are loose or uneven. There’s also a section with a small but still sketch drop-off below,  an alternate path is available to the right if you’re not comfortable crossing it.

  • What to Bring: Water (lots of it), sunscreen, a hat, and a towel for sweat.

  • Crowds: This trail is very popular, especially at sunrise and sunset. Start early to beat the heat and the crowds.

  • Kids: Kids can absolutely do this hike, but they may tire out quickly—pace yourself and take breaks if needed.

  • Post-Hike Treat: Stop by koko nuts for shave ice afterward. It’s the perfect reward for conquering this challenging hike!

  • Safety Tip: Take breaks as needed, and watch your footing—the steep incline can be tough on knees and ankles
