‘Ehukai Pillbox

North Shore

If you’re up for a bit of a workout and some incredible views, the ‘Ehukai Pillbox hike is a must! Located on the North Shore, this trail takes you through a lush forest and rewards you with stunning panoramic views of the coastline and famous surf spots like Pipeline. The pillboxes (concrete bunkers) at the top are decorated with colorful graffiti, giving the trail a unique vibe. It’s one of those hikes that feels like a little adventure, and we love bringing friends and family here when they visit.

  • Length: 2.3 miles round trip (about 1.5 to 2 hours).

  • Difficulty: Moderate (short but steep in some sections).

  • Parking: Free parking is available at Sunset Elementary School (when school is not in session). Arrive early, as spaces fill up quickly.

  • Trail Conditions: The trail can be muddy and slippery after rain, so wear sturdy shoes with good grip.

  • What to Bring: Water, sunscreen, a hat, and a camera for the views.

  • Crowds: This hike is less crowded than some others, but weekends can still get busy. Midweek mornings are usually quieter.

  • Safety Tip: The trail has steep drop-offs in certain areas, so watch your footing, especially near the pillboxes.
