Kailua Beach

East Side

Kailua Beach is a family-friendly gem on Oahu’s windward side, known for its wide, sandy shoreline, gentle turquoise waters, and steady trade winds that make it ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding, and windsurfing. It’s often considered the perfect spot for a full, relaxing beach day or a launch point for exploring the nearby Mokulua Islands.

  • Best Time to Visit: Morning or early afternoon for calm waters and a less crowded experience.

  • Lifeguards on Duty: Yes, lifeguards are present during the day.

  • Hazards: It is generally safe, but watch for occasional currents further out and avoid kayaking or paddleboarding on very windy days.

  • Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and a large parking lot. However, parking can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. Arrive early to secure a spot close to the showers, making packing up after a full day at the beach easy.

  • Activities: Rent a kayak or paddleboard to explore the nearby Mokulua Islands or stroll along the scenic shoreline.

  • Nearby Eats: Kailua Town is just minutes away and offers a variety of dining options, including Morning Brew for coffee and light bites, Lanaikai Juice for smoothies, and Down To Earth for vegetarian options. Across the street is Buzzes Steakhouse, which has a relaxed dress code; you can rinse off in the shower and throw on an Aloha shirt for a steak dinner.
